Shenandoah baseball earns nation’s top ranking in latest poll

Shenandoah University’s baseball team is the nation’s top-ranked squad in the most recent D3baseball.com/NCBWA Top 25 poll released Tuesday morning by the website. It’s the Hornets’ first No. 1 ranking since they held the nation’s top spot in the poll for four straight weeks in 2011.

Shenandoah is 14-1 this season after topping Penn State-Altoona and Mount Aloysius on Sunday in a pair of non-conference games at home at Bridgeforth Field. SU has 595 points and 14 first-place votes in the D3baseball.com poll, 27 points better than No. 2 Cortland State (New York).

“The recognition of being number one reflects upon the efforts of the players up to this point and is very flattering,” Hornets head coach Kevin Anderson is quoted as saying in a news release from the school. “The challenge now is to improve in all phases of the game and to meet those challenges on a daily basis.”

Shenandoah is one of three Old Dominion Athletic Conference teams to hold spots in the latest D3baseball.com Top 25. Randolph-Macon (13-4), the preseason pick to win the ODAC, is ranked ninth, while Roanoke (16-5) is 20th.

Emory (Georgia) held the top spot in the poll for the first three weeks of the regular season but dropped to third this week after being swept by Covenant in a doubleheader on Sunday.
