Shenandoah earns spot in NCAA DIII baseball tournament

Shenandoah University was chosen as the No. 2 seed in the Mid-Atlantic Region, to be held in York, Pennsylvania, for the NCAA Division III baseball tournament, according to selections released by the NCAA on Monday morning.

The Hornets (36-8), making their eighth NCAA tournament appearance in the past nine seasons, will open play at 7:45 p.m. Thursday against No. 7 Maritime (New York) at PeoplesBank Park. SU, which spent six consecutive weeks ranked No. 1 in the D3baseball.com/NCBWA Top 25 earlier this season, earned a spot in the 56-team tournament field as a Pool C (at-large) participant.

Joining Shenandoah and Maritime in the eight-team, double-elimination York Regional are No. 1 Johns Hopkins, No. 3 Wheaton (Massachusetts), No. 4 Rochester Institute of Technology (RIT), No. 5 Alvernia, No. 6 Elizabethtown and No. 8 Lesley (Massachusetts).

Of the teams in the York Regional, SU has only faced Elizabethtown on the diamond this year. The Hornets beat the Blue Jays 9-4 at home on March 1.

SUNY-Maritime enters tournament play with a 26-11 record and qualified for the regional round by winning the Skyline Conference championship. Thursday’s matchup will be the first-ever between Shenandoah and Maritime, according to a news release from SU.
