Recreation Calendar: Aug. 30

The following are some of the area recreational events that are being held:

Cruise in

The Helltown Cruisers will hold a cruise in from 5 to 9 p.m. Saturday at the Gazebo in Front Royal.

Half marathon

The inaugural Shenandoah half marathon will be held from 6:30 to 10:30 a.m. Saturday in Luray.

The race begins near Shenandoah National Park at Hawksbill Recreation Park, 205 Pool Drive, Stanley, and ends at Lake Arrowhead Recreation Park in Luray.

Dirt Drags

Diesel, gas and manual transmission dirt drags will be held from 4 to 11 p.m. Sunday at the Page Valley Agricultural & Industrial Fair in Luray.

Registration fees are $10 per entry. Admission to the event is $10 for adults, $5 for ages 6-12 and free for ages 5 and under.

Dash for Diabetes

The Chick-fil-A Dash for Diabetes will be held Monday at Millbrook High School in Winchester.

The four-mile race is sponsored by Shenandoah Valley Runners. Registration is $23 or $20 for SVR members. Late and race-day entries will be $25.

The kids’ race, open to ages 5 to 12, will be $13 for the Mile Race and $5 for the 100-yard dash. Late and race-day fees will be $15 and $7.

Night catfishing

The Town of Luray will offer night catfishing until midnight Sept. 8 at Lake Arrowhead in Luray.

Fishing permits are required and are available for ages 16 and older. Information: 540-743-6475.


The James “Spading” Buracker Memorial 5K will be held at 9 a.m. Sept. 9 at Luray’s Greenway Park & Ride.

Century Ride

The Shenandoah Valley Bicycle Coalition will hold its annual Century Ride Sept. 10 at Hillandale Park in Luray.

Participants ride at their own pace. Maps will be provided and the route will be patrolled by automobile.

Registration ranges from $15 to $50. Information: 540-433-9247.

Walking tour

The State Arboretum at Blandy Farm in Boyce will offer a free walking tour from 3 to 4:30 p.m. Sept. 13.
