Wielansky, Sutera lead 2017 All-VBL selections

Charlottesville’s Michael Wielansky and Purcellville’s Thomas Sutera took home the major awards as the Valley Baseball League announced its 2017 All-VBL teams Friday afternoon. Front Royal, New Market, Strasburg and Woodstock combined to land a total of 15 players on the first and second All-League teams.

Wielansky, a second baseman from the College of Wooster, earned VBL Player of the Year honors after leading the league in batting average (.432), hits (69), doubles (18) and runs scored (38). He also hit four home runs and four triples and had 34 RBIs and 11 stolen bases.

Sutera, a right-handed reliever from Sienna College, was named the Valley League’s Pitcher of the Year after going 6-0 with a 1.57 ERA and three saves in 15 relief appearances for the Cannons. He struck out 39 batters in 34 1/3 innings.

The All-VBL first team infield included New Market catcher Jake Washer (.346 batting average, five home runs, 35 RBIs), Purcellville first baseman Trevin Esquerra, New Market shortstop Nick Barber (.322, two home runs, 21 RBIs) and Covington third baseman Bruce Strickland.

Front Royal’s Dominic Canzone (.404, three homers, 23 RBIs), New Market’s Jake Rhinesmith (.369, three homers, 33 RBIs) and Staunton’s Max Wood were named first team outfielders.

Strasburg slugger Brandon Quaranta, the Valley League’s run-away leader in home runs (11) and RBIs (49), was named first team designated hitter. Charlottesville’s Rick Spiers earned first team utility.

The first team pitching staff included two Strasburg starters, right-handers Ben Dum (5-2, 2.77 ERA, 39 strikeouts, nine walks in 45 1/3 innings pitched) and Zach Peek (4-0, 1.80 ERA, .198 batting average against, 40 strikeouts in 35 innings pitched), and Woodstock righty Nick Fuchs (3-3, 2.72 ERA, league-high 53 strikeouts in 43 innings). Charlottesville’s Sean McCracken earned the fourth and final first-team starting pitcher spot.

Front Royal left-hander Josh Andrews was named to the first team’s second relief pitcher spot after posting a 0.68 ERA, two saves and 46 strikeouts in 26 1/3 innings over 18 appearances.

Strasburg’s Dum and Quaranta and Woodstock outfielder Danton Hyman (a 2017 second team selection) were the three repeat All-VBL selections after each earned first-team recognition in 2016.
