Photographer wins four awards at SNPA-Inland convention

Northern Virginia Daily photographer Rich Cooley won four Readers’ Choice awards at the Southern Newspapers Publishers Association-Inland annual meeting in Colorado Springs, Colorado, on Tuesday.

Cooley took first place in spot news photography, first place and third place in features photography, and first place in sports photography. Cooley’s photos competed with newspaper photographers from around the nation.

“On behalf of everyone at the Daily we congratulate Rich,” said Mike Gochenour, publisher of the Northern Virginia Daily. “We are honored to have his photos grace our pages each and every day. It’s awesome that folks across the country see the same things we do in his photos.”

In spot news, second place went to Ben Krain of the Arkansas Democrat-Gazette in Little Rock, Arkansas. Third place was a tie: Greg Lovett, of The Palm Beach Post, West Palm Beach, Florida; Theresa Proudfit, The Daily News, Iron Mountain, Michigan.; and Scott Rogers, The Times, Gainesville, Georgia.

In features, second place went to Jonathon Gruenke of the Daily Press in Newport News, Virginia. Second place for sports photography went to Gruenke and third place went to Aileen Devlin, also of the Daily Press.

The Readers’ Choice Awards are voted on by members of the Southern Newspaper Publishers Association and their readers.

In addition to the Readers Choice Contest, the convention featured an AP Judges’ Contest. Grand prize winner was Ian Maul, of the Tulsa World in Tulsa, Oklahoma.
