Wildcats advance to state championship match with win over Southampton
Warren County High School’s volleyball team is set to make the program’s first-ever state championship finals appearance.
The Wildcats went on the road and knocked off Southampton, 3-1, in the VHSL Class 3 state semifinals in Courtland on Tuesday evening. The win advances Warren County to the state championship match against Lord Botetourt at 3 p.m. Saturday at Virginia Commonwealth University’s Siegel Center in Richmond.
Warren County (21-4) and Southampton each entered Tuesday’s semifinal showdown with winning streaks that stretched back to mid-September. Warren County extended its run to 17 straight victories with the win over the Region 3A champs.
Juniors Kaley Foulks and Lauren Fox led the Wildcats with 13 kills apiece, while senior Britney Carter had eight kills in the win. Fox added three blocks and Foulks had four aces and 12 digs. Junior setter Morgan Coons dished out 41 assists for Warren County, and senior libero Chelsea Ruffner had 19 digs.
Like the Wildcats, Lord Botetourt’s trip to Saturday’s state championship match will be the program’s first. The unbeaten Cavaliers (30-0) beat defending state champ Hidden Valley, 3-0, in the other Class 3 semifinal on Tuesday. The win was Lord Botetourt’s 27th sweep in 30 matches played this season.
