FRONT ROYAL – Skyline High School wrestling coach Matt Keel tells his team often that improvement in the sport doesn’t occur in small increments. Those who devote the necessary work to wrestling, he says, experience growth on the mat in “bumps.” Hawks senior Tyrelle Robinson can attest to that school of thought.

STEPHENS CITY – Sherando High School head wrestling coach Pepper Martin said when he came across a 9-year-old Jacob Stevens competing for a local youth wrestling league, he knew the Warriors’ program was soon going to receive a “potential good one.” As a high school sophomore last season, Stevens was showing that potential.

STRASBURG – It wasn’t that Christyan Reid felt overwhelmed or uncomfortable playing as a freshman on Strasburg High School’s varsity girls basketball team at the beginning of the season a few weeks ago. Playing for the Winchester Rising Stars AAU program for the last two-plus years has acclimated her to competing against older players. But Reid still needed some time to adjust.

STRASBURG – Before hitting the mat with Strasburg High School’s wrestling team for a couple of camps over the summer, Austin Miller hadn’t wrestled in five years, preferring basketball as his winter sport of choice. If Mike Wood hadn’t had a seat in the corner for the last three years Strasburg spent without Miller on the roster, that fact might very well have been lost on the Rams’ head coach.
