STEPHENS CITY -- Sherando knew all about Salem's high-powered running game, a seemingly unstoppable offensive attack that helped the Spartans to blowout victories in each of their first three playoff games.
STEPHENS CITY -- Salem came into Saturday's Class 4A state semifinal game with Sherando averaging over 300 yards a game. The Warriors' strong defensive unit knew it would be a challenge, but on Saturday they rose to the occasion in a big way.
STEPHENS CITY -- Sherando knows it's close to returning to the state championship game for the first time since 2007. Just one win away from appearing in the Class 4A title game, the Warriors are so close that senior cornerback Isaiah Williams says they can taste it.
STEPHENS CITY -- Sherando head coach Bill Hall didn't know if the Warriors' defense was beginning to wear down against Courtland's wing-T rushing attack midway through the fourth quarter of Friday's Class 4A North regional semifinal game. Sherando senior linebacker Daniel Eppard said the Warriors were fine.
STEPHENS CITY -- Sherando's game with Liberty tonight is a rematch from a regular-season contest, in which the Warriors won 45-23. However, don't expect the Warriors to take the Eagles lightly in their Class 4A North region second round playoff game at Arrowhead Stadium.
Last weekend was a big one for Brian Cornell (Warren County '10) and his Virginia Wesleyan teammates as they advanced to the NCAA men's soccer tournament. However, it was even more special for Cornell and his family.
STEPHENS CITY -- Tyler Hamilton doesn't get a lot of the glory like some of his teammates. The Sherando defensive tackle and tight end doesn't run or pass for touchdowns or make dazzling interceptions, and Hamilton is OK with that.
STEPHENS CITY -- Just when Amherst County High School's football team thought it had finally built a little momentum in Friday's Class 4A North first-round playoff game against Sherando, along came LeeQuan Johnson Jr.
