FRONT ROYAL -- Early on Tuesday night in what eventually became a 3-1 (25-23, 22-25, 25-19, 25-10) win for Skyline, it was anybody's volleyball match, as the Hawks and their cross-county rival, the Warren County Wildcats, split the first two sets of their non-district volleyball match.
The Northern Virginia Daily Sports staff collaborated to create a football top 10 list. Each staffer voted, with 10 points being awarded to the top-ranked team, nine to the No. 2 team and so on. Numbers in parenthesis indicate where each team was last week.
STRASBURG -- The high school football season kicked off Friday night with a bang for the Skyline Hawks when they traveled to face the Rams of Strasburg. An early defensive battle quickly got out of hand as the Hawks won their opener 28-0.
FRONT ROYAL -- Earlier this summer, Skyline wrestling coach Matt Keel sat down at his computer, looking to do some research on The Super 32 Challenge, an upcoming annual tournament showcasing the top wrestlers in the nation.
FRONT ROYAL -- Skyline and Fauquier entered Tuesday night's nondistrict match with emotions running high, and battled evenly through two sets before the Falcons were able to take control and claim a 3-1 (25-21, 19-25, 25-16, 25-21) victory.
FRONT ROYAL -- Skyline's cross country program had a car wash several weeks ago and coach Mike Tanner decided to order pizza for the team for lunch. Almost every runner was excited for the meal -- except Thomas Madden.
STEPHENS CITY -- When he was pulled from Saturday's Northwestern District baseball semifinal with Skyline following a frustrating sixth inning at-bat ending with a strikeout and a tossed batting helmet in the dugout, Sherando senior catcher Derek Reid had to wonder if he would get a chance to redeem himself.
WINCHESTER -- Sean Goodson knew the Skyline hitters would struggle against his curveball. In his last appearance against the Hawks, Goodson tossed six solid innings and earned the win, thanks to a sharp curveball that left hitters off balance.
