FRONT ROYAL -- Five years ago, Ryan Rettberg was at a friend's house. Looking for something to pass the time, the friend's dad took them to a nearby golf course. It was the first time Rettberg had ever put his hands on a club. But what started as a fun thing to do quickly became Rettberg's passion. And in just five years, the Skyline senior has elevated his game to among the best and has earned the title as The Northern Virginia Daily's Golfer of the Year.
FRONT ROYAL -- The Skyline Hawks began their 2009 basketball campaign quickly this year. Having completed just over two weeks of practice due to the football teams' extended season, the Hawks hosted Kettle Run with a couple of players still working on making the transition.
FRONT ROYAL -- Even when its last chance for the playoffs seemed exhausted with last week's loss to Sherando, Warren County still kept faith that a berth in the Division 3, Region II field could be earned with a win Friday night against arch-rival Warren County, along with a little help from the outside.
FRONT ROYAL -- Sherando marched into Skyline High School expecting a tough match and hoping to build on their first-place standing in the Northwestern District. After a slow start, Sherando coach Chuck Ashby called a timeout to rally his troops.
WINCHESTER -- Millbrook held onto to its share of a three-way tie for first place in the Northwestern District girls volleyball race, defeating Skyline 3-1 (25-9, 23-25, 25-7, 25-15). The win keeps the Pioneers (13-3, 4-1 in district) knotted with James Wood and Sherando for the district's top spot.
FRONT ROYAL -- According to Emily Shannon, even high school volleyball teams sometimes suffer a "case of the Mondays." After having a few days off since their last match, James Wood's varsity squad got off to a sluggish start, but was able to rebound in a 3-1 (23-25, 25-20, 25-17, 25-12) win over host Skyline.
