QUICKSBURG -- The fierce long-standing Shenandoah County rivalry between the Central Falcons and Stonewall Jackson Generals was played out in their second head-to-head volleyball match of the season on Thursday night.
QUICKSBURG -- What a sight for Stonewall Jackson coach Dick Krol to behold. For the first time in 370 days, Krol watched as Stonewall tailback Colton Koontz, hand in hand with Matthew Deavers and Jordan Laughlin, marched out to midfield for a captains' meeting with Strasburg on Friday night.
HARRISONBURG -- In the parking lot at Heritage Oaks Golf Course, Stonewall Jackson golf coach Roger Wilkins stepped onto his team's white activity bus, strapped himself into the driver's seat, and with the window down and thumbs up, flashed a pearly smile before heading back to Quicksburg.
HARRISONBURG -- After each Millbrook point, the noise became louder and louder in the tiny auxiliary gym at Spotswood High School. Millbrook's bench yelled "huoh" in unison after each kill, block or ace in the Pioneers' third-place match with Stonewall Jackson. Each time it was followed by laughter from the Millbrook starters.
QUICKSBURG -- The script was set for Stonewall Jackson. The Generals were trailing by one touchdown in overtime, facing a fourth-and-goal from the 1-yard line. The snap came, followed by the handoff to tailback Dylan Dawson. After a brief pause the referee signaled the call.
STRASBURG -- The Strasburg Rams played like they were in mid-season form for most of the match as they took a 3-1 (25-9, 25-12, 19-25, 25-16) win over Shenandoah County rival Stonewall Jackson in non-district volleyball action on Thursday night.
QUICKSBURG -- Strasburg volleyball coach Suzanne Mathias knows the capability of her girls on the court. She also knows that on Tuesday night, despite Strasburg's 3-1 (25-16, 25-17, 15-25, 25-22) win over Stonewall Jackson, she didn't see it.
QUICKSBURG -- The memory sat in the back of Dylan Dawson's head for nearly a year. Last season, Dawson and fellow Stonewall Jackson tailback Colton Koontz, both sidelined with injuries, sat and watched as Wilson Memorial throttled the Generals by 32 points.
QUICKSBURG -- The pressure was certainly there. As a freshman last season, John-Michael Pirtle was named starting quarterback when Dylan Dawson, the previous starter, was moved to tailback before the Generals' season opener.
