NEW MARKET -- Claire Barbour hadn't made much use of her net play this season. But with the match against Shenandoah District and county rival Stonewall Jackson on the line Friday afternoon, she decided it was time to try.
QUICKSBURG -- Everything went according to plan. Patrick Bain was supposed to see teammate Jose Garcia creeping toward him at the top of the penalty box.
QUICKSBURG -- The Central softball team has longed for a game like this all season. Sure, the Falcons can usually count on veteran pitcher Brea Hinegardner to throw strikes and keep opponents to a few runs each time out.
WOODSTOCK -- The word both teams used for Tuesday's girls soccer match between Central and Stonewall Jackson was intense, and that certainly described it well.
QUICKSBURG -- Stonewall Jackson senior Dylan Dawson stood on the Generals sideline, the final minutes of a 6-1 win over Central spilling off the scoreboard.
QUICKSBURG - As a freshman, Juan Flores was known simply as "five meals."
The first-year student at Stonewall Jackson was a team manager for the Generals' boys soccer team, but Flores himself wasn't exactly a walking billboard for fitness. Standing at just 5 feet 5 inches, Flores was a meaty 200 pounds and kids would joke that he ate five square meals a day. He could only watch the players from the sideline, but yearned to see time on the field.
QUICKSBURG -- Emily Workman really couldn't believe she hit it that "far." Part of that mindset was in place because hits have been hard to come by for the senior center fielder.
BERRYVILLE -- When star player Patrick Bain left Monday's game just 10 minutes in, it would've been easy for Stonewall Jackson's boys soccer team to panic.
BERRYVILLE -- Although their No. 2 and No. 3 players were absent, the Clarke County Eagles topped Stonewall Jackson 5-4 in a nondistrict girls tennis match on Monday.
QUICKSBURG -- The rain came down in buckets, coating the Stonewall Jackson pitch with a slick film of water. Generals senior midfielder Patrick Bain stood on the sideline, his sprained right ankle packaged in a black brace.
STRASBURG -- Trotting off the pitch of Glenn Proctor Field at Ram Stadium on Tuesday, Strasburg sophomore Taylor Hill shivered from an adrenaline-fueled chill.
STRASBURG -- Although both teams came into Friday's boys soccer match with an unblemished record, Stonewall Jackson has a tradition of handling Strasburg easily.
STRASBURG -- Stonewall Jackson senior Patrick Bain walked off the pitch with a strip of black tape wrapped around his injured hand. Generals senior Dylan Dawson walked back from the Strasburg bench, where the first aid kit lay, with a fresh bag of ice packaging his dislocated shoulder.
QUICKSBURG -- When Caleb Golladay hobbled off the Stonewall Jackson pitch in the 73rd minute to scattered claps and cheers, cramps clinging to both his calves, it was evident just how much energy the senior had exerted.
BERRYVILLE -- Although Clarke County, one of the area's premier girls soccer programs, totally dominated play defeating Stonewall Jackson 5-0 ON Thursday in both teams' season opener, the Generals may have witnessed the emergence of a future star in freshman goalkeeper Rhea Jett.
BERRYVILLE -- Ethan Emmart was facing hitters for the first time on Wednesday. Without any scrimmages or even so much as facing his own Clarke County teammates in practice, Emmart's preseason pitching work consisted of throwing a few bullpen sessions.
HARRISONBURG -- Stonewall Jackson girls basketball coach Jeff Burner called a timeout with 59 seconds left to play in the Generals' game against Riverheads on Friday night to design a play for senior Heather Stout.
QUICKSBURG -- Last summer, Stonewall Jackson girls basketball coach Jeff Burner talked with senior forward Heather Stout about being patient this season with a very young team. Stout is the only senior on a team that has seven freshman and three sophomores.
QUICKSBURG -- When Central upset Group A top-ranked Strasburg on Saturday, the Falcons fed off their ability to double-team Rams center Jenna Smoot and hold the senior to eight points.
QUICKSBURG -- If the key to winning is defense, then Central's boys basketball team appears to have what it takes to run deep into the postseason after an impressive performance against host Stonewall Jackson on Wednesday night.
STRASBURG -- Bobby Rager and Daniel Reynolds are always trying to make each other better. Every day at practice, the 119- and 125-pound Strasburg wrestlers are pushing each other, hoping to help each other improve with their skill sets.
Stonewall Jackson will stay; Central and Sherando will go -- at least for now. According to a press release issued by the Virginia High School League on Tuesday, the Redistricting and Reclassification Committee heard modification requests from the three schools regarding the VHSL's alignment plan for the 2011-12 and 2012-13 school years.
