FRONT ROYAL -- The 13th hole at Jackson's Chase Golf Course is not for the faint of heart. It's a challenging, 478-yard, par 5, with the fairway hanging to the right of the tee box. It's one of the five longest holes on the course and for any golfer, the prospect of a par or even a bogey is satisfactory.
BERRYVILLE -- After taking Stonewall Jackson easily in the first set, host Clarke County struggled through the second and fourth set but was able pull out a 3-1 (25-6, 17-25, 25-14, 25-20) win in Monday's non-district volleyball match.
QUICKSBURG -- Stonewall Jackson coach Dick Krol has only a few concerns heading into the Generals' scrimmage against Manassas Park today: the health of his starters, the size of his starters, and the stifling weather the Generals have been practicing in.
The recent class of coaches, athletes and contributors inducted into the Virginia High School League Hall of Fame comprises two local coaches, well established in the same sport, who are admittedly ecstatic to rub elbows with one of the most established coaches in Virginia.
QUICKSBURG -- If it wasn't enough for Clarke County's boys soccer team to have to travel 70 miles for its match in the Region B Tournament quarterfinals, imagine having to travel all that way to face a team that had beaten them twice in the regular season and was 18-0 going into the game.
QUICKSBURG -- There was no on-field celebration for Central on Thursday. There were no shrieks from teammates, no applause from fans in the stand, not even a team gathering following the final whistle. In fact, there wasn't even a final whistle.
HARRISONBURG -- The Stonewall Jackson Generals took several top spots, and Central also earned some medals, in the Shenandoah District Track and Field meet on Wednesday evening at Harrisonburg High School.
STRASBURG -- The discus event, as Lucas Ryan will tell you, requires a lot of technique in order to be successful. The shot put, on the other hand, is simply a test to see who is truly the strongest guy out there.
NEW MARKET -- Claire Barbour hadn't made much use of her net play this season. But with the match against Shenandoah District and county rival Stonewall Jackson on the line Friday afternoon, she decided it was time to try.
QUICKSBURG -- The Central softball team has longed for a game like this all season. Sure, the Falcons can usually count on veteran pitcher Brea Hinegardner to throw strikes and keep opponents to a few runs each time out.
QUICKSBURG - As a freshman, Juan Flores was known simply as "five meals."
The first-year student at Stonewall Jackson was a team manager for the Generals' boys soccer team, but Flores himself wasn't exactly a walking billboard for fitness. Standing at just 5 feet 5 inches, Flores was a meaty 200 pounds and kids would joke that he ate five square meals a day. He could only watch the players from the sideline, but yearned to see time on the field.
QUICKSBURG -- The rain came down in buckets, coating the Stonewall Jackson pitch with a slick film of water. Generals senior midfielder Patrick Bain stood on the sideline, his sprained right ankle packaged in a black brace.
