STRASBURG -- Shawn Owens had a premonition on Friday night.
The Strasburg sophomore defensive back had a feeling the ball was coming his way in the closing seconds of the Rams' home football matchup against cross-county rival Stonewall Jackson, a feeling that developed into a certainty as he spied Generals quarterback John-Michael Pirtle rolling out of the pocket toward the right sideline.
The Northern Virginia Daily Sports staff collaborated to create a football top 10 list. Each staffer voted, with 10 points being awarded to the top-ranked team, nine to the No. 2 team and so on. Numbers in parenthesis indicate where each team was last week.
Behind Lauren Agnew, the Rams went 2-0 last week, with wins over George Mason and Central. Against the Mustangs she had 11 kills, 16 assists and six aces.
SHENANDOAH -- It's a phrase Michael Reynolds has waited so long to say, the one that upon realization slapped a huge grin on the face of coach Mark Roller.
Strasburg football is on a winning streak.
For the first time under Roller and the first time since 2007, the Rams have won back-to-back games, as the Purple and White pounded Page County on Friday night, 36-22.
FRONT ROYAL -- Walking along Blue Ridge Shadows' 18th fairway Thursday, the fate of the Bull Run District tournament championship rested in the hands of three golfers. Each one represented their team's top position -- Strasburg's Derek Davis, Manassas Park's Joey Gaouette and Madison County's Collin Tucker -- and each one's score would play a part in determining the district winner.
BERRYVILLE -- The Clarke County Eagles hosted a tri-team Bull Run District cross country meet Wednesday afternoon and made a strong showing, taking first place for both boys and girls against Strasburg and Rappahannock County.
WOODSTOCK -- Strasburg seniors Lauran Agnew and Casey Spiker have been together for enough volleyball matches that they know each other's strengths quite well.
STRASBURG --Three times before, Rakwon White's faith had been tested this season. Three times, his Strasburg football team had come out on the losing end of not particularly close contests.
STRASBURG -- The Strasburg Rams opened up Bull Run District play Thursday with a strong start to make quick work of Manassas Park as they dominated the evening, winning in straight sets, 3-0 (25-6, 25-18, 25-15).
STRASBURG -- Coming into this season, Strasburg golf coach Ricky Bowley knew the strength and success of his team would rest in the hands of his returning talent.
WINCHESTER -- Strasburg traveled to James Wood on Monday and fell to a powerful Colonels front line, which dominated the net to defeat the Rams 3-0 (25-17, 25-12, 25-16).
WOODSTOCK -- It was an emotional night for Central, especially the seniors. The Falcons beat Strasburg, 28-8, on Friday night, keeping the seniors undefeated against their Shenandoah County rival.
STRASBURG -- Despite an obvious lapse in the second set, Strasburg was able to defeat Stonewall Jackson 3-1 (25-15, 23-25, 25-15, 25-18) in girls volleyball Tuesday night.
STRASBURG -- The high school football season kicked off Friday night with a bang for the Skyline Hawks when they traveled to face the Rams of Strasburg. An early defensive battle quickly got out of hand as the Hawks won their opener 28-0.
FRONT ROYAL -- The 13th hole at Jackson's Chase Golf Course is not for the faint of heart. It's a challenging, 478-yard, par 5, with the fairway hanging to the right of the tee box. It's one of the five longest holes on the course and for any golfer, the prospect of a par or even a bogey is satisfactory.

FRONT ROYAL -- Gage Steele could see the momentum start to creep over to the Strasburg sideline. After a 25-yard strike from Rams quarterback Hunter Funk cut Warren County's lead to just six points early in the second quarter, the purple and white were beginning to play with swagger and Steele decided to do something about it.
STRASBURG -- Since Jill Lester took over as coach of the James Wood volleyball team before the start of the 2008 season, the Colonels have implemented a jump-serve attack that has flustered many opponents.
FRONT ROYAL -- For three years, Strasburg and Warren County have met on the gridiron to open their respective seasons. In 2007, Strasburg blanked the Wildcats, 35-0. For the past two years, however, it's been all Warren County.
STRASBURG -- The glaring issue for Strasburg coach Mark Roller this preseason has been finding replacements for departed running backs Bub McKelvey and Tanner Orndorff, who last season rushed for 845 and 711 yards, respectively.
MADISON -- Strasburg and Clarke County's girls softball teams split their regular season meetings, so the atmosphere was tense when they squared off in the Bull Run District tournament semifinals at Madison County.
BEALETON -- The last time Zach Cover faced George Mason, the right-hander was impressive, tossing a complete game shutout and propelling the Rams into a first-place tie in the Bull Run District.
STRASBURG -- The question posed to Madison County pitcher Jordan Aylor seemed to handcuff the junior just like she handcuffed Strasburg batters on Thursday night: Had she thrown a perfect game this season?
STRASBURG -- Strasburg completed its regular season on Wednesday with a 6-1 Bull Run District baseball win over Madison County. The win put the Rams in a tie with George Mason for the regular-season title. The Rams and Mustangs will have a one-game playoff, most likely on Friday, at a site and time to be determined.
STRASBURG -- The discus event, as Lucas Ryan will tell you, requires a lot of technique in order to be successful. The shot put, on the other hand, is simply a test to see who is truly the strongest guy out there.
