WOODSTOCK -- With the Valley League season winding down, Woodstock entered its game Thursday with Rockbridge just two games out of a berth in the playoffs.
FRONT ROYAL -- An early deficit was too much for the Front Royal Cardinals to overcome as they dropped their fourth straight game, 9-6, when they hosted the Waynesboro Generals on Thursday night.
WINCHESTER -- It didn't take long for Winchester Royals coach John Lowery Sr. to notice the potential in shortstop Cory Spangenberg. In fact, through his team's first 26 games, Lowery has a pretty good idea what the future holds for his freshman sensation.
NEW MARKET -- The triple-digit temperatures that held throughout most of the day did not keep the fans away from Rebel Park on Thursday evening when New Market hosted Front Royal in Valley League action.
WINCHESTER -- After an eight-run first-inning explosion Thursday night, the last thing the Winchester Royals appeared to need would be late-inning heroics.
WOODSTOCK -- Buddy Sosnoskie was nearly asleep, his head tilted back as he dozed on his parents' deck near Charlotte, N.C. Sosnoskie's mother and brother were the first to give him the news: "You just got drafted, you just got drafted!" they erupted.

WOODSTOCK -- Luray third baseman Jonathan Griffin smashed a three-run homer in the top of the first inning and Wranglers starting pitcher Kevin Carlow followed that up with five strong innings on the mound to pummel Woodstock Friday, 8-4, in Valley League baseball action.
NEW MARKET -- Maybe it's too far a stretch to say the New Market Rebels were one strike away from securing their first three-game win streak of the season.
WOODSTOCK -- The three-hour bus trip from Covington was worth it for the Lumberjacks as they topped the Woodstock River Bandits, 9-3, in Valley League action Wednesday night.
WINCHESTER -- The Winchester Royals faced an almost impossible task on Sunday. They trailed 4-0 after a half inning to Rockbridge and were forced to scramble for pitching after scheduled starter Dustin Ward became sick just before the game.
WOODSTOCK -- The Woodstock River Bandits were hoping to keep their winning percentage above .500 when they hosted the Staunton Braves in Valley League action Sunday night.
NEW MARKET -- Covington scored two runs in the top of the ninth inning and another run in the 11th to stage a dramatic come-from-behind 5-4 win over New Market on Friday in Valley League baseball.
NEW MARKET -- It didn't take much -- just some timely hitting, an efficient starting pitcher, and a few sips of luck -- but the New Market Rebels managed to upend top-ranked Haymarket, 4-3, on Wednesday at Rebel Park.

WOODSTOCK -- The Woodstock River Bandits were looking to halt their three game losing streak when they hosted the Front Royal Cardinals on Sunday evening in Valley League action.
WINCHESTER -- With Covington leading Winchester by three runs with two out in the top of the sixth inning, Lumberjacks cleanup hitter Mike Martinez launched a towering grand slam home run over the center-field fence to propel Covington to an 11-5 win on Friday in Valley League baseball.
NEW MARKET -- The Harrisonburg Turks and New Market Rebels met in the first repeat matchup of the season for both clubs, in Valley Baseball League action Thursday night.
WOODSTOCK -- The Woodstock River Bandits took on the Haymarket Senators Friday night in a contest of teams tied for first place in the Valley League, along with Winchester, at 7-4.
WINCHESTER -- June in the Valley League is a learning experience that will hopefully pay dividends in July, and that was surely the case in Sunday's marathon 13-inning game between Winchester and Harrisonburg.
