FRONT ROYAL - A quick start and a dominant finish gave Warren County and first-year boys basketball coach Vernon Mathews their first win in the young season 63-51 against the visiting Strasburg Rams on Friday night.
FRONT ROYAL -- Everyone knows what Matt Sherfey can do with his arm on the football field. But there's something else the all-district quarterback can do in a different season and in a different role -- cause havoc at the top of a pressure defense on the basketball court.
FRONT ROYAL -- Central clamped down on the defensive end in the second half to pull away with a 48-34 nondistrict win over Warren County on Wednesday night. The Falcons held the Wildcats to only 12 second-half points.
FRONT ROYAL -- Even when its last chance for the playoffs seemed exhausted with last week's loss to Sherando, Warren County still kept faith that a berth in the Division 3, Region II field could be earned with a win Friday night against arch-rival Warren County, along with a little help from the outside.
FRONT ROYAL -- It must have seemed like old times. Here was the Warren County football team, holding a rare lead in the fourth quarter. And, boom, Brentsville hits a big play for the go-ahead touchdown.
FRONT ROYAL -- Just a week ago, the Warren County defense did a good job of containment to limit Handley speedster Jeremiah Wilson's rushing yards. Wilson would rush for 154 yards in an overtime win by the Judges, but he was the only running back the Wildcats had to concern themselves with.
FRONT ROYAL -- Dressed in pink in support of breast cancer awareness, Warren County hoped to ride the spirit and steal a victory from Liberty in Northwestern District volleyball action Wednesday night.
FRONT ROYAL -- Most coaches will tell you the game is won in the trenches. The battle between the offensive and defensive line often makes the difference in a ballgame in who wins and loses. On Friday night, Warren County hosted James Wood in smashmouth football at its best.
FRONT ROYAL -- The Central Falcons coasted to an easy first set win in their non-district volleyball match with the Warren County Wildcats on Tuesday night, but they had to go full-throttle the rest of the way. The Falcons were running on fumes at the end, as they took a 3-1 (25-13, 26-24, 26-28, 27-25) win.
FRONT ROYAL -- Warren County continued its search for its first victory when it hosted cross-town rival Skyline on Thursday night. The Wildcats overcame an early deficit to win the first set and gain the edge over the Hawks.
FRONT ROYAL -- After two sets Thursday night, it appeared that the Warren County Wildcats had an opportunity to pull off an upset. After a narrow defeat in the first set, Warren County persevered and tied the game, sending the crowd into an uproar.
WOODSTOCK -- The Central Falcons rode positive momentum from their Apple Capital tournament win over Washington last week to gain their second win of the young season, 3-1 (25-19, 20-25, 25-19, 25-20), over the Warren County Wildcats in non-district volleyball action on Tuesday night.
FRONT ROYAL -- Teams grow and develop throughout a season with the opportunities they have to play together in live action. Two teams with very little game experience took the court on Thursday night when Warren County hosted the Panthers from Page County in volleyball action.
Given Corey Rice's performance in his three starts last season -- 22-of-33 for 304 yards and a touchdown -- it's no wonder Sherando coach Bill Hall named him the Warriors' starting quarterback for Sherando's game tonight at Park View.
The new season is here, and with it comes a number of questions. With several stars heading to college football and district realignments wreaking havoc in the Shenandoah Valley, the changes have clouded expectations.
FRONT ROYAL -- The art of blocking, at first, came easy for Damien Caison. As a tight end at Warren County, Caison had only to set himself on the line of scrimmage, take one or two hard steps, and engage the bulky defensive end or linebacker in front of him.
