Submissions Policy

Updated May 2016

We welcome letters and opinion essays (commentary) that are well written, thoughtful and thought-provoking on a variety of topics.  We do not accept form letters that are sent to other newspapers.

Letters to the Editor
Letters must be 350 or fewer words. Letters that are longer than 350 words will not be accepted.

Letters must not include Web addresses, phone numbers or addresses,  or material pulled from another source without attribution. Letters must be addressed to the editor.

Letters must not include personal attacks, hate language against other people or groups of people or potentially libelous statements or allegations.

We only accept letters from readers in our circulation area, or those letters that bring up issues specific to our area.

Letters may address or be a rebuttal to a letter to the editor or news story, but only one rebuttal letter will be accepted per letter writer.

Material quoted from another source must be attributed. Content of the letter must be original content and not copied from another source without attribution. We do not accept letters of endorsement or letters that include solicitations of donations.

Reader commentary
Commentary submissions are opinion essays and must be labeled commentary and not letter to the editor when submitted.  They are not long letters or rebuttals to previous letters to the editor or to other commentaries or news stories – that would be a letter to the editor and must be limited to 350 words or less.

Commentaries must be well written, with facts checked and sources of material noted. They must not be any longer than 750 words.  If they are longer than 750 words, they will not be accepted.

We require the author’s name, address and phone number as well as a sentence about the author for a brief bio at the end of the submission.  The author must  disclose any personal, financial or professional interest he or she has in the topic of the commentary.

Endorsements
We do not accept endorsements of any kind in letters or commentaries.

Election

Letters  may discuss a candidate’s issues and performance, but must not be a direct endorsement.  We will only accept one letter in a 30-day time period per writer about a specific candidate.

We will stop accepting submissions about election issues or candidates by 5 p.m. on the Tuesday before election day.

All submissions
We verify all submissions by telephone and you must include a telephone number for verification. If no number is provided, your letter will be not be accepted.

There is no guarantee that submissions will be accepted. If you do not hear from us within a week, then your letter or commentary has not been accepted.

All letters and commentaries will be edited.
