Wakefield announces May athletes of the month

Wakefield Country Day School in Huntly has announced the athletes of the month for May are Connor Poe of Marshall and Sydney Penza of Washington, Va.

Poe, a seventh grade boys’ lacrosse player helped lead his team to one win and one tie in the month. He was the second leading scorer on the team in the month and had two goals in the team’s 5-3 win over the Shenandoah Valley-North Vipers on May 14. Poe scored in every game this season; he had 11 total goals and a number of assists as well.

Penza, a junior on the varsity girls’ soccer team, was a force on defense as she assisted her keeper and fellow defenders to a strong finish to the season. The team enjoyed its first winning season in some years in part due to strong defense. The Owls gave up just three goals in the month during regulation play and overtime periods, while advancing to the DAC Division II championship game. She played center fullback, and used her speed to stifle many threats to the goal.
