Cattle-handling clinic

HARRISONBURG — Renowned clinician Tom Curtin will lead a clinic on low-stress cattle handling Saturday and Sunday at Bar W Ranch in Bridgewater.

The clinic, co-hosted by Bar W Ranch and the Virginia Cooperative Extension, is scheduled for 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. each day. The farm is at 1477 Ridge Road.

Curtin is a stockman and horseman who travels the country to share his knowledge of low-stress cattle-handling methods and their benefits.

Registration is $50 for adults, and children younger than 18 can attend for free. Registration proceeds will be donated to the Augusta County 4-H/FFA Market Animal Show and Sale.

Dairy MPP enrollment

HARRISONBURG — Dairy farmers have until June 1 to enroll in the revised Margin Protection Program for Dairy.

Improvements have been made to the program that provides a safety net from shifts in feed and milk prices. A web tool has been established at www.fsa.usda.gov/mpptool to help dairy farmers determine which level of coverage is best for them based on price projections.

Among the program changes included in the Bipartisan Budget Act of 2018 are monthly margin-period calculations instead of bimonthly, increases in covered production and substantial decreases in premium rates for Tier 1 coverage, and an administrative-fee exemption for limited-resource, beginning, veteran and disadvantaged producers.

Operators must make a new coverage selection for 2018 even if they enrolled during the previous sign-up period for the year.

Visit www.fsa.usda.gov/dairy or your local USDA service center for more information.
