How are those New Year's resolutions going?

It is now February and all those resolutions we made back in January are probably starting to disappear. Things happen... life happens and we can't always keep the same schedule and healthy habits we were able to a month ago. Not to worry! No matter what your resolution was, here are some tips to help surround yourself with ways to succeed.

You have already made the decision that something in your life needs to change, that is why you made a resolution in the first place right? We can't expect ourselves to keep up these new changes on our own; it takes the support of other people and our environments to ensure success. To begin, we must evaluate our environments; are they supportive to your new goals or do they enable you to continue with the old unhealthy habits? Maybe you wanted to stop smoking, but your daily breaks and talking time with coworkers included cigarettes, so that won't work anymore. This is an example of an environment that isn't supportive to your new goal; now you need to find a way to still get that social time you need without having the other parts tempting you to throw out the resolution.

Our environments have influences on us even when we aren't realizing it. Our day to day routines become just that... routine. This makes us not always aware how situations affect our behaviors. Maybe you wanted to get more exercise without joining a gym. You started off walking every day after work, but with this bad weather we've been having it is hard to go walking outside when you can not get to the sidewalks, causing you to not be active in about a week now. Maybe you can bring your sneakers to work with you and take a stroll through the hallways or around your building during breaks and before you leave for the day. Or find some unique ways to get moving inside your house until the weather gets better.

It takes commitment and creativity to keep these resolutions alive after the thrill of the New Year is gone. Just remember, everything takes practice and when you get behind on these new goals, pick yourself back up and start them again! Build back your confidence and find ways to keep these goals in your life when obstacles come and things you used to do don't always support your new life. Surround yourself with people who understand what you are trying to do and can help keep you on track when you get behind. It is only February... plenty of time to get those resolutions back!
