Being healthy: Does that concern just what you eat?
Letter from a new college student:
As a college student, and now an official member of the West Virginia University family, I often wonder what it is that I need to do to keep myself healthy and happy. That seems to concern both my eating habits and what relationships I have going on around me.
Recently my heart has been torn in numerous directions due to the decisions I am making for myself to better my education and ultimately, my life; but I have found it to be difficult to keep up with both my dietary health and my relationship health.
During this recent turmoil that has overcome me, I have realized it is not just what you eat that keeps you healthy, it's what surrounds you as well. One must surround themselves in a healthy environment to make themselves healthy and happy. This is extremely difficult and definitely easier said than done, but in order to obtain that health goal, you may need to remove some stressors in your life to help reach those healthy goals one may have set.
In relationships you have to have a healthy standpoint as well as when eating and keeping up with your dietary needs. You have to do things for yourself and things that make you happy, and that won't always be what the other person wants. With my acceptance into school and the time dwindling down until when I leave, my personal relationship has taken quite a beating. The easy way out would be to not go to school, and to relate that to what you eat...that would be eating something full of cholesterol and super greasy. It's simply not healthy. Going to school is healthy though, and choosing something not as greasy and with less cholesterol is the healthier choice as well. You have to remember it's your life, and you're the only one fighting for you, so take care of yourself in all ways possible.
So next time you are stressing over that cheeseburger you may be eating, sit back and think about all the other things in your life that may not be healthy or the right choice for you to surround yourself with. It's amazing at how many things can affect one's overall health. And as for me, I am leaving for school within three weeks, and going into it optimistic that my relationship will evolve into a healthier dynamic. That is the choice for me and the one that will ultimately make my life healthier.
