I'll be perfectly frank with you: In order to land your next job, YOU MUST SET YOURSELF APART from your competition. The best way to accomplish this is to develop your career brand. Your unique selling propositions (USPs) are your career brand. You sell what you do best: What value do you bring to the job market? What are your successes and achievements? By answering these questions clearly in your elevator pitch, resume and cover letter you will generate interest from recruiters. Your credibility, visibility, personality and personal style are all factors in making up your brand.
Things to consider when marketing yourself include determining how others perceive you and what your USOs are. Define who your target market is - who are you selling yourself to? Depend underwear would not be marketing their products on MTV! Make sure you are clearly and consistently sending the same message - this is what I do, why I am the best and why you should hire me.
Utilize appropriate channels to sell yourself. Develop an online presence through personal (Facebook) and professional (LinkedIn) networking websites. Read blogs to stay current on industry trends and identify people of interest in your field. Talk to people at church, your kid's soccer game, the person in line behind you at Wal-Mart and tell them about yourself and what you are looking to accomplish. I can tell you from personal experience these methods have been very successful for me!
While most people are not comfortable talking about themselves or asking for help, at this point in your life, you need to do both in the same conversation. In sales, you sell yourself and the product (in this case your skills and accomplishments are the product) and ask for the order! Your order is employment opportunities to follow up on.
Personal branding, self branding or self positioning - call it what you like. You will benefit by personal position strategies to advance your career. Build and nurture your personal brand and you will make yourself a must-have, can't-fail professional!
