Did you realize that approximately 65 percent of jobs filled these days are unadvertised opportunities?
What does this mean to you? It means you should step up your cold calling efforts!
Cold calling is typically a term used in sales to call upon potential customers in order to build a larger client base and root out sales opportunities. This method relates perfectly to what you must do to find these unadvertised job openings.
The first step in this process is compiling a list of all companies that you might be interested in working for.
The second step in the process is gathering the names of the people who have the power to offer you a job. This step is accomplished by calling each company's main number and asking the receptionist (or department assistant) for the name and title of the hiring manager in your field of expertise. While this step is getting increasingly difficult, be persistent! www.linkedin.com is a great source to use to research who is who in a company. Typically, contact information is included in the person's profile. If you are unsure of what www.linkedin.com is all about, you really need to attend our workshops!
The third step in the process is writing a strong cover letter. While you may be sending out a great many letters, make sure that each letter is individualized by addressing each to a named individual, and, if possible, saying something about the company to showcase that you've done some homework about the company. Remember that your cover letter needs to be compelling in order to convince the reader you are worthy of an interview. Do this by featuring your skills and how they directly relate to the company's needs.
The fourth step in the process is following up with the people you wrote to in the third step. For many people, this step is the hardest. It means getting on the phone and contacting these people, selling yourself and asking for an interview. Be persistent, even if the potential employer says there are no current job openings. As with the typical sales process, if your customer is not buying today, put them on your calendar to contact again in six weeks.
