Kids and careers

I am sorry for the intermittent posts this past week; I have been fortunate to have been included in the local high school career fairs that were held this week and that has kept me away from my desk more that usual.

In the past few days, I have spoken to dozens of our community high school juniors and seniors and I am pleasantly surprised to hear that many of them do actually have career goals and ambitions beyond high school. I guess this surprises me because as the mother of a high school senior, I am not seeing this vision in my own home! In all fairness to my son, I have to admit when I was that age things were not too clear for me either. So to talk to kids that actually have an answer to "What are you planning on doing when you graduate" is a refreshing change. I heard psychologist, accounting, electrical engineer, music teacher and Marines answers more times than I heard "I don't know."

Some interesting observations I made at the career fairs were the flood of kids at the Army and Marine displays, three health care providers, two senior care facilities and lots of interest in the FBI. There was also a representative from the Department of Labor promoting the Virginia Apprenticeship Program.

It is great to see so much emphasis on career development and workforce readiness in our high schools. While there is not a whole lot of my high schools days I would like to relive, I wish there had a been an opportunity for a career fair like the kids at Handley and James Woods had this week!
