With the "sawtooth economy" we are currently experiencing, it seems like it depends on what news media you read or watch as to whether jobs and spending are on the rebound. If you are one of the many folks struggling to find your next job or to supplement your "under-employment" income, it may be time for you to get creative!
So many people have developed their professional skills for their 9-to-5 job; when asked what they enjoy most about their profession they reply, "the paycheck."
It is at home or the time we spend "off the clock" that we pursue our passions, hobbies and interests. Could it be possible that you could make a living or at least bring in some extra cash doing the things you love?
If you love aerobics, consider contacting your county parks and recreation department and starting an exercise class. Are you an artist or love crafting, knitting, jewelry making? Check out www.etsy.com and start a virtual storefront to sell your goods to the world!
Craigslist is also a great place to list your services. For example, maybe you are a handyman, a wiz at small engine repair, a clown, a math tutor, childcare provider, gunsmith, upholsterer or you're in a band - you can post your services for free on Craigslist. Check out the "gigs" or "services" section of the website for freelance opportunities.
I had probably the biggest break of my life by answering a blind ad on Craiglist in the "gigs" section. My passion is special event floral design and I have freelanced for years to earn extra income. I took a chance by responding to the blind ad on Craigslist, and the company placing the ad turned out to be one of the most prestigious event planning firms in our country looking for freelance floral designers to help on a high profile project in Washington! Not only did I earn a nice paycheck for the weekend and get exceptional bragging rights, more importantly, I connected with dozens of other designers and have developed a strong network and weekly freelance work.
Think beyond newspaper classified and job boards for paychecks, get creative and spend some time thinking about how you can turn your personal interests into an income!
