For two years, talk of things employment related has been mostly negative, so I am happy to report some good news. Unemployment rates are dropping! The average length of an unemployment claim this week is 13.9 weeks. At one point, not too long ago, the average claim was closer to 26 weeks!
Unemployment rates in our area over the past year:
Frederick County 8% 6.8% Change of -1.2%
Shenandoah County 9.7% 7.9% Change of -1.8%
Warren County 8.1% 7.6% Change of -0.5%
Winchester City 7.8% 7.8% Change of 0%
In a normal, healthy economy the ideal unemployment rate is between 4 - 7 percent, so for the most part, we are nearing "normal." Over the past few weeks the amount of foot traffic in our office has gone down considerably, and that is a positive indicator the economy is on the upswing!
