Is your resume weak?

I'll be blunt and get to the point: If your resume has any, or heaven forbid, all of the mistakes I list below, YOU NEED TO FORMAT A NEW RESUME!

I have not talked about resumes in a while and feel like I need to reiterate the importance of having an accomplishment-driven document serving as your marketing piece.

As you may or may not know, the Virginia Employment Commissions offers free resume review services, which means I get the opportunity to see a lot of resumes on a daily basis. Some of the mistakes I see most often include using old and boring templates, stating what you are looking for as an objective and if any accomplishments are listed at all, they are buried in long, chunky paragraphs.

Additional blunders are only listing your duties without quantifying results (think show me, don't tell me) and not using the keywords and phrases in job descriptions.

You may have created a resume in college or had a neighbor/family member help you with it, but with new resume trends and such a fiercely competitive job market, there is usually room for improvement. I have seen resumes from people with multiple Master's degrees, aerospace engineers, teachers and even human resource management who are not current on resume trends.

If you feel your resume is causing you problems in your career advancement, you can do online research to become more familiar with a "hybrid" resume format or you can make an appointment (540-722-3415) to sit down one-on-one and discuss your resume in our Winchester office.

We will be conducting a workshop on "How to prepare for a Behavioral Interview" with a mock interview exercise on Tuesday, Sept. 13 at 9 a.m. This is a free workshop and I hope you will consider attending this informative session!

Kind regards -
Sam
