Those vacationing to the beach this summer will find at least a few minutes shaved from their travel time thanks to a new VDOT initiative.

The "Reach the Beach" initiative, which was announced by Gov. Robert F. McDonnell Monday and is set to begin Wednesday, will include real-time signs around Virginia showing motorists the fastest route to the Virginia Beach oceanfront and the Outer Banks in North Carolina, according to a release from the Governor's office.

Six signs will be placed around the Hampton Roads area, each with updated travel time information for each destination and travel route.

Signs will be located at the following locations:

• I-64 eastbound at Denbigh Boulevard (2) in Newport News
• I-264 westbound at First Colonial Road in Virginia Beach
• I-664 at U.S. Route 58 eastbound (Bowers Hill) in Chesapeake
• VA Route 168 northbound Chesapeake Expressway
• I-664 south at Dock Landing Road in Chesapeake

In addition to the Hampton Roads signage, travel time information also will be posted at highway rest areas in New Kent County, near the North Carolina border in Skippers and Fredericksburg. This is in addition to the travel time signs in other areas of the state, including Interstate 95 between Fredericksburg and Washington D.C. and on Interstate 66 between I-495 and Gainesville, according to the release.

"The 'Reach the Beach' initiative will help VDOT improve the overall traveler experience by providing updated travel times at key decision points approaching and leaving the beach," McDonnell said in the release. "This system will help travelers by providing them with the most reliable travel time information available and where possible, encourage them to use alternate routes that are less congested."
