Your candiate primer for the June 12 GOP Senate primary

On June 12, voters will choose between four Republican candidates for U.S. Senate. The winner of the nomination will then vie with former governor Tim Kaine for the seat being left vacant by retiring U.S. Sen. Jim Webb.

Below is basic information about each of the four GOP hopefuls. This is the first in a series of posts aimed to help voters differentiate between the candidates and to help them make better-informed decisions in the voting booth.


George Allen

Hometown: Mount Vernon

Education: University of Virginia '74, UVA Law '77

Background: Member of the Virginia House of Delegates (58th district) from 1983 to 1991; U.S. Representative (7th district) from 1991 to 1993; governor from 1994 to 1998; U.S. Senator from 2001 to 2007
