The Women's Memorial Society, organized in 1867 to care for the graves of Confederate soldiers in St. Matthew's Cemetery, will hold a memorial program at 10:30 a.m. May 15 at the cemetery behind Reformation Lutheran Church in New Market.

The speaker will be Lt. Col.. Troy Marshall, site director of the Virginia Museum of the Civil War in New Market. The Rev. Bass Mitchell, senior pastor at Manor Memorial United Methodist Church, will provide the invocation and benediction. Daniel Walker, a student at Stonewall Jackson High School, will sing and play his guitar, and Isaiah Wolverton, at student at Lord Fairfax Community College, will play taps.

A memorial wreath will be placed at the monument and Reagan Whitaker and Josie Fawley, granddaughters of WMS member Ramona Neese, will place a bouquet of flowers. The VMI color guard will participate and the names of VMI cadets lost during the Battle of New Market will be read. Women's Society members will also read memorial poems.

Two deceased longtime members of the Women’s Memorial Society, Anna Coffman and Virginia Thompson, will be remembered during the program.
