MARTINSBURG — The Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office is seeking assistance from the public in locating an individual who “picked up” the cellphone belonging to a victim of a fatal accident on May 11 in Jefferson County.
One person died and nine others were injured in the accident on U.S. Route 340 in the area of Augustine Avenue near Washington High School.
Anyone with information that could assist police in returning the cell phone to the victim’s family is asked to call the Sheriff’s Office at 304-728-3205.
“The family would like to get the phone back so they can have the pictures that he had on the phone,” according to a social media post by the sheriff’s department. “It is believed that the individual contacted the family; however, they were not able to get the phone at that time.”
Police said John E. King, 32, of Reston, Virginia, died as a result of injuries sustained in the traffic accident, which occurred at approximately 3:15 p.m..
Nine others were also injured when five vehicles, including a tractor-trailer, were involved in the crash in the northbound lane of U.S. 340 at the St. Augustine Avenue traffic light, near Washington High School.
One person was airlifted to Fairfax, and one child initially transported to Winchester by ambulance was transferred to Fairfax, police said in a press release. The remaining victims were taken to Jefferson Medical Center and all were released.
