Virginia culture meets the Shenandoah Valley for the fifth annual River Valley Festival, a cultural festival that promotes live bluegrass music, local craft beer and wines from Shenandoah Valley vineyards and breweries, along with pit-roasted meats from local farms.
Festival organizer Chris Smith said the River Valley Festival is an affordable, family friendly event where people can come and experience pit-roasted meats, Virginia craft beer and wine, and folk/bluegrass music by local musicians, juggling shows and dancing in an intimate, safe and beautiful setting.
“It is a celebration of the beauty we are blessed with in the Shenandoah Valley,” Smith said.
The River Valley Festival will be held in Front Royal on Sept. 29. It was started in 2014 by a group of graduates of Christendom College and alumni of St. Georgy’s Academy.
“We are a nonprofit, so everything we do goes back into the festival and making this an event the community can enjoy for years to come,” Smith said.
Smith said over 2,000 festivalgoers attended last year’s event and they’re excited to continue to see it grow in the years to come.
Live music will include Marie Miller, a songwriter and recording artist originally from the valley, and The Plate Scrapers, from western Maryland, will perform folk and bluegrass tunes throughout the day.
The River Festival will offer a selection of local brews and wines. A full list of breweries and vineyards will be announced a week before the festival. Food will be catered by Charlemagne Catering, a farm-to-table company based in Front Royal.
“We specialize in a traditional preparation of pork known as porchetta, fire-roasted tenderloin wrapped in pork belly and rubbed in garlic, pepper, sea salt, and fennel,” Smith said. “It is phenomenal!”
Festival sponsors include The Clairvaux Institute, a nonprofit educational foundation dedicated to revitalizing by returning to the sources of culture, Rappahannock Cellars, MSN Properties, Cottonwood Ranch and ERA Browne and Rutherford.
