STRASBURG – Runners, joggers and walkers of all ages, covered in color, will take part in the  fifth annual Skyline-Warren Annual Color Run at Skyline High School in Front Royal on Saturday.

Ian Charles, organizer and history teacher at Skyline, started the color run to help offset the cost of travel expenses for students traveling abroad.

“Over the past five years I’ve taken eight to 10 students from Skyline High School and Warren County High School abroad,” Charles said. “Traveling is difficult for low-income students and I did not think it was fair to deny those students the chance. Fundraising allows low-income students the chance to travel that they might not have had otherwise.”

The cost for a student  traveling with Charles is roughly $3,400. Past fundraisers, including the color run, have generated $17,000 in 2015 and $12,000 in 2017.

To travel abroad, students sign up two years in advance, allowing them to pay monthly instead of all at once.

Past study abroad trips have included Italy, Greece and Peru.

The 2019 all-inclusive trip, minus lunch and souvenirs, will take students to England, France and Spain where they will visit historical landmarks they’ve learned about in the classroom.

“Students are able to get college credit for free if they choose to do a project when they return,” Charles said. “The tours are very educational. We visit sites I teach about in class.”

The Color Run is an un-timed event during which  participants are encouraged to wear all white. During the 3.2 mile run,  over 100 pounds of chalk will be thrown on runners as they run through the Skyline High School campus and river walk.

Runners will finish plastered in color, which is harmless and washes off.

“This event is so much fun,” Charles said. “People of all ages come out and support our students. More than half of those that attend are young kids because it’s just a fun and exciting event.”
