Rodney Smith Jr., of Raising Men Lawn Care Service in Huntsville, Alabama, spoke recently to Randolph-Macon Academy students about the 50 Yard Challenge, an idea he came up with to inspire kids ages 7-17 to give back to their community. The challenge includes children from around the world mowing, raking or shoveling snow on 50 yards in their community for free. They receive T-shirts for every yard mowed for free, and when they reach 50 yards they receive a black T-shirt, a new lawn mower, weedeater and blower. There are 24 R-MA students participating in the challenge. They include, front row, from left, Euseekers Wiliams III, Justin Ngo, Ben Murphy, Chris Jones, Christian Mitschow, Baruc Hanson, Ana Glotfelty, Kamila Yusupova, Jason Hoff, Grant Leasure, Leo Burge. Middle row, James Ross, Shukiryah Hasanka, Quinlin Bruhn, Rodney Smith, Ali Bassett, Ethan Park, Godfrey Delaney, Madagan Athey. Top row, Donavan Heggs, Jaylen McLeod, Emma Langlotz, Abby Stewart, Kaycie Williams, Taylor Wreath.
