Virginia State Police released the name of the man killed Tuesday night while changing a tire on Interstate 66.
Steven D. Mackall, 55, of Washington, D.C., died at the scene just before 8:25 p.m. when an eastbound tractor-trailer struck him while he was working on the driver’s-side tire of his silver Chevrolet 1500 pickup truck. The tractor-trailer did not stop, continuing eastbound on the interstate.
State police continue to search for the tractor-trailer. The only description witnesses could provide was that it was white.
“The Virginia State Police is encouraging anyone who might have been in the area of the crash Tuesday night and recalls seeing a white tractor-trailer to please reach out to us. This tragic crash claimed a man’s life and the trooper wants to be certain the incident is investigated as thoroughly as possible,” said state police spokeswoman Corinne Geller.
Mackall was traveling with another pickup truck and both stopped, pulling off the right shoulder at the five-mile marker, at the highway sign announcing exit 6 for Winchester in one mile.
The other pickup driver was not hurt.
Anyone who may have seen the crash or can provide information about the tractor-trailer is asked to call state police at 540-829-7766.
