A Front Royal man died from injuries sustained in a traffic crash on U.S. Route 522 at the intersection of Lake Frederick Drive in Frederick County on Wednesday morning.

Sgt. F.L. “Les” Tyler of the Virginia State Police said Ronald Travis, 66, was taken to Winchester Medical Center where he died from his injuries at around 11:30 a.m.

Tyler said Jonathan Frend, who was driving a 2012 Honda SUV, had entered Route 522’s southbound lanes from Lake Frederick Drive when his vehicle collided with a 2006 Ford F-150. The impact, which occurred on Frend’s driver’s side door, spun his vehicle into the northbound lanes where he collided with a 2007 Peterbilt tractor-trailer, Tyler said.

Travis tried to avoid the other vehicles, Tyler said.

“Mr. Travis ran off the road to the right to avoid the crash in front of him and struck a utility pole,” Tyler said.

Frend was taken to Winchester Medical Center. The drivers of the tractor-trailer and Ford pickup, who were not identified, were not injured in the collision, Tyler said.

Frend was charged with failure to yield to right of way, according to Trooper R.D. Riggs’ investigation. Riggs was assisted by the Clarke County Sheriff’s Office, Clarke County Fire and Rescue and Warren County Fire and Rescue.
