A Stephens City man died in a vehicle crash in Fauquier County last week, state police said Monday.

Authorities identified the victim in the May 1 crash as 47-year-old Kelly D. Holzhauser. Holzhauser died at the scene of the collision between two vehicles at the 25-mile marker on westbound Interstate 66, according to information from spokeswoman Corinne Geller.

The crash occurred at approximately 6:20 p.m.

A 2007 Honda Civic, driven by Holzhauser, changed from the right lane to the left but collided with the front of a 2013 Chevrolet Malibu traveling in the left lane. The impact caused the Honda to run off the left side of the highway and then overturn several times as it went through the median and across the eastbound lanes, according to police. The car came to rest against an embankment.

Holzhauser was wearing a seat belt. The driver of the Malibu, identified only as a 45-year-old man from West Virginia, also was wearing a seat belt but did not report any injuries in the crash. Rescue workers took a 25-year-old male passenger riding in the Malibu to a nearby hospital for treatment of minor injuries. The passenger was not wearing a seatbelt.

The crash remains under investigation by state Trooper C.R. Scally.
