Man accused of rape, trying to set victim on fire

Shane Sisk

WOODSTOCK – Shenandoah County authorities say a man attacked and raped a woman and then tried to wrap her up in a burning blanket at her Maurertown home over the weekend.

Shane Wesley Sisk, 42, of no fixed address, remains held without bond in the Rappahannock-Shenandoah-Warren Regional Jail on multiple charges.

Shenandoah County deputies charged Sisk with rape, forcible sodomy, object penetration, domestic assault, strangulation, abduction with the intent to defile, malicious wounding, breaking and entering into a dwelling at night to commit a felony, arson of an occupied dwelling, and arson of a dwelling with the intent to commit a felony. Sheriff’s Office Sgt. Robert Poe said Monday the investigation is ongoing and authorities could file more charges against Sisk.

A criminal complaint filed in the Shenandoah County Juvenile and Domestic Relations Court states the Sheriff’s Office responded to a residence on Back Road around 4:50 a.m. Saturday for a report of an assault. The victim states that Sisk forced entry into her home at approximately 11 p.m. Friday, the complaint filed by Investigator G.D. Ogle states. Sisk then forced her upstairs to her bedroom and at one point shoved his fingers down her throat, choking her. The suspect then committed sex acts on the woman against her will, the complaint notes.

At one point in the bedroom, Sisk used a lighter to set a blanket on fire, the complaint states. Sisk then tried to wrap the victim in the burning blanket. Ogle observed burn marks on the bedroom floor consistent with the victim’s statements, the complaint notes. Sisk took the burning blanket out of the residence and put it next to a building on the west side of the property, the complaint states. Ogle discovered a burnt blanket next to the building.

The assault continued until Sisk left the residence at approximately 4:50 a.m. Saturday, the victim told the investigator.

During the alleged assault, the woman grabbed a wooden slat from a broken closet door in the bedroom and hit Sisk in the face causing a laceration, the complaint states.

Authorities located Sisk in the 100 block of Harman Road, Maurertown, late Saturday morning and arrested him without incident, Poe said.  Sisk works on a farm in the Harman Road area.

Ogle observed that the suspect had a laceration on the right side of his face next to his right eye. Ogle also saw blood on Sisk’s hands. The victim had scratches on the front and side of her neck, her lower lip was lacerated and bleeding and she showed signs consistent with strangulation, the complaint states. The alleged victim was taken to Winchester Medical Center where she was treated and released Saturday, Poe said.

Sisk had lived with the victim within the past 12 months, the complaint states.

A magistrate notes on the checklist used to determine bail that “as the complaining witness states it, the sexual assault was unusually brutal.” The magistrate adds that seven of the 10 charges trigger a presumption against bond. The magistrate also notes that the defendant claimed he had a key to the residence.
