NEW MARKET – Town Council members met in a closed session last week to discuss the merits of increasing Town Manager Todd Walters’ salary.

Council members said Walters has worked hard for the town and agreed he deserved to see a pay bump. The manager’s new salary is up from $78,795 to $86,674 a year, effective Saturday.

After the meeting, Councilman Peter Hughes said council members told Walters when they hired him in November 2017 that they would reassess his salary before the end of 2018. Hughes said they were happy with Walters’ performance.

In addition to his duties as town manager, Walters is serving as the temporary zoning administrator after Alex Berryman left last month.  Walters is also filling one position on the Historic Overlay District Review Board left by Berryman.

Council members re-appointed one of two members of that board on Tuesday evening. Robert Moore, the vice chairman, asked to serve another term while Danny Rice, the chairman, does not wish to return next month.
