FRONT ROYAL – Construction on Warren County’s Rockland Park has jumped ahead of schedule thanks to other nearby economic development projects.
H&W Construction worked with county staff on grading along the east and west sides of Fishnet Boulevard near the entrance to Rockland Park. The contractor hauled excess material from the nearby Royal Farms and Marriott construction sites at no cost to the county, General Services Director Brandy Rosser said in an email this week. This helped the county complete the installation of three, multi-purpose athletic fields and a parking area on the west side of Fishnet Boulevard, Rosser noted. The county is working to install an additional field and parking area on the east side.
“Utilization of the excess material has resulted in a significant cost savings for the County and allowed this project to be implemented ahead of our original schedule,” Rosser states.
County staff members and local architect Fred Andreae are working together on the renovation of the bathhouse located in the center of the park near a proposed baseball-softball complex. County staff members hope to renovate the bathhouse this winter and begin construction of an accompanying parking area, Rosser said. The county then plans to move forward on the construction of the baseball-softball complex though funding for the project is not yet identified, Rosser added.
Warren County bought the 219-acre Rockland Park, formerly known as the Fishnet Property, in 2009 and created a master plan for the recreational amenity. The park includes walking trails, a playground, an 18-hole disc golf course, two picnic shelters and parking area. The future development of the park spread over three phases includes features such as the multi-field baseball-softball complex, restrooms, walking trails, a dog park, amphitheater with outdoor seating, camping areas, a fire-and-rescue training facility, a recreation center and a possible site for an elementary school, according to information on the county’s website.
