The Berryville Baptist Rascals perform during their Christmas program at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center in Bethesda, Maryland, last year.

The Berryville Baptist Rascals, a puppet theatrical group, is set to perform at the Strasburg Christian Church at 5 p.m. Sunday.

The program features contemporary Christian, Sunday school, country, and rock and roll music that share positive messages focusing on Christian values.

“Although it is a children’s ministry, we seem to appeal to the adults and grandparents as well using upbeat music and messages of encouragement,” said Joan Houck, the founder and director of the Baptist Rascals.

For nearly three decades, the group has visited local churches to perform. Kids, ranging from the sixth grade all the way to seniors in high school, have taken part in the group over the years.

Each year a mission trip — lasting anywhere from one to three weeks, is held during the summer to help those in need. The group has traveled across the U.S. and other areas around the world, including South Africa, the Dominican Republic, and Puerto Rico. Houck said the group will return to Puerto Rico this June.

“We’re going to have a program almost completely in Spanish and hold vacation bible school and work in hurricane-devastated areas,” she said. “Our primary summer goal is to work in areas of need, bringing a message of love to the children.”

Houck said the group has so far amassed close to $14,500 for their trip this year and will seeking freewill offerings during the performance this weekend.

Light refreshments will be offered following the show. The program is free to the public. The church is located at165 High St. in Strasburg.
