Mountain View High School will still be called Mountain View High School and Honey Run Elementary School will still be called Honey Run Elementary School after a vote by the Shenandoah County School Board on Thursday night ended in a 3-3 tie.

The board was voting on whether Mountain View High School and Honey Run Elementary School should once again be known as Stonewall Jackson High School and Ashby Lee Elementary School.

A tie vote means the proposal was not approved and the names will not be switched back.

The names were changed by the school board in 2020 because they were named after Confederate generals. The renamings were part of a move to condemn racism and affirm the division’s commitment to an inclusive school environment for all. Since then, however, new board members have been elected, and some county residents have pushed to restore the former names, citing the desire to remember the region’s history.

On Thursday night, Dennis Barlow, Kyle Gutshall, and Brandi Rutz voted in favor of restoring the former names. Andrew Keller, Cynthia Walsh, and Marty Helsley voted not to restore the names.

See Saturday's Northern Virginia Daily for details on this story.

The shool board is elected to represent the people. It is clear that the 3 that voted not to change the names back do not. There will be another election and then the 3 will be shown the door. This will not go away untill the eleected officails to the will of the people. Mr Helsley should do us all a favor and resign, he is not an honest person.

Time to turn the page and move on. Let's concentrate instead on education, teacher pay and retention and school safety.

The 3-3 School Board vote which defeated a motion to revert to Confederate generals school names was a blow for social justice and equity. The educators, and citizens, who care about our students and our community have had a toxic cloud removed. But, it may be too much to expect that the advocates of a Confederate revival will learn the beneficial factual, healing lessons from this experience.

My kids did not go to school here so I am not in the know for Shen Co but is there not a process for a tie-breaker in these cases?
