The Winchester Composite Squadron, one of the 25 squadrons in the Virginia Wing of the Civil Air Patrol, changed leadership Dec. 18 in a time-honored change of command ceremony. Lt. Col. Rob Carlson relinquished command to 1st Lt. Noel Morrison.
Morrison has been in CAP for three years, serving in various positions in the unit from information technology officer, finance officer and transportation officer. He served in the Army National Guard for 11 years as a military police officer, and deployed multiple times in support of Operations Enduring Freedom and Iraqi Freedom.
Carlson served as the unit’s commander through a four-year command tour. He has been a member of CAP for 17 years, 13 of which were spent in Minnesota. He was recognized with a Commander’s Commendation Award for his successful tenure.
The unit leads the annual Wreaths Across America ceremony, held the second Saturday in December at the Winchester National Cemetery. The unit also supports the community with emergency services support. Several members volunteered in North Carolina in September to support those affected by Hurricane Florence.
The unit maintains a hangar at the Winchester Regional Airport and meets at 6:30 p.m. each Tuesday at the Cherry-Beasley Readiness Center at the Winchester National Guard Armory. The roster includes 25 cadets and 20 senior members.
