Game Jam

Shenandoah University is seeking participants for its first Global Game Jam, a 48-hour international event where people come together to create a video game or non-digital game like a board or card game.

The jam starts at 5 p.m. Friday and runs until 5 p.m. Sunday in the Shenandoah Center for Immersive Learning in the Health & Life Sciences building on the Winchester campus.

There are 25,490 jammers registered in 864 sites in 112 countries, which makes it the world's largest game jam. Participants must be 18 or older. Experience is not necessary. Teams will be announced at the event.



John Morrison, a Vietnam veteran and member of the Vietnam War Memorial, will be the speaker at the meeting of the Shenandoah County Democratic Caucus at 10 a.m. Saturday at the historic Courthouse in Woodstock.


Farmer and apiarist Tony Tringale will present a program on beekeeping from 6 to 7:30 p.m. Monday at Samuels Public Library in Front Royal. Registration required at 540-635-3153 or

Bowman Library in Stephens City will hold the following activities:

Monday: 5 p.m., Lego Club for elementary and middle school students; 6 p.m., PJ Boogie for ages 3-11.

Tuesday: 5 p.m., Storybook Art for ages 6-11.

Jan. 31: 6 p.m., Xbox open game play for ages 8-up.

Feb. 1: 11 a.m., Build Together for all ages.

Feb. 2: 11 a.m., Groundhog Day celebration with "Bowman Bill." Celebrate the end of winter reading with awards, crafts, stories and ice cream at 1 p.m., Paws for Reading with certified therapy dogs.

Monday: 3 p.m., MakerSpace for ages 3-up; 4 p.m., Mysterious Middle School Book Society for fifth- through eighth-grade students; 4:30 p.m., Teen Advisory Board for middle and high school students; 5:30 p.m., La Leche meeting for breast-feeding and expectant mothers.

Tuesday: 10:30 a.m., Community Connections social; 4:30 p.m., Story Flix Club for ages 6-11, read the book and then watch the movie "The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe."

Wednesday: 10:30 a.m., signing story time; 1-3 p.m., Homeschool Hub; 4:30 p.m., Shenandoah Valley Chess Club (one-on-one instruction for new players and 5:30 p.m. lecture on basics and strategy).

Jan. 31: 6-8 p.m., Drawesome for ages 12-up.

Feb. 2: 10:30 a.m., family story time; 11 a.m., Lego Club; noon, family film "Hercules" shown with popcorn and lemonade provided.
