Soil sampling

The Virginia Cooperative Extension office is partnering with libraries in Shenandoah County to make soil fertility analysis better and more accessible to farmers and homeowners.

Each library will have a soil probe for collecting soil samples and soil boxes and forms for submitting samples. The soil probe can be checked out just like a book or video. Extra boxes for farm soil samples will be available. Testing will be done by the Virginia Tech Soil Testing Laboratory. Homeowner samples cost $10 per sample.

Libraries having soil probes/boxes include Fort Valley, Strasburg, Woodstock, Edinburg, Mount Jackson, New Market and Basye/Orkney Springs.

Information on how to collect a soil sample can be found at www.soiltest.vt.edu. Additionally, Extension Master Gardener volunteers can help answer questions by calling 540-459-6140 or e-mail greenhelpline@gmail.com. Farmers can reach Extension Agents by calling the Extension office or by e-mailing Bobby Clark at raclark@vt.edu.
