Today is the deadline to register to attend Corhaven Graveyard’s work day to help paint the fence and a celebration from 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Saturday in Quicksburg. Corhaven is a historical burial ground for enslaved African Americans. A wreath-laying ceremony will be held and a free catered lunch will be offered.
Today is the deadline to register to attend an International Willa Cather seminar at 9 a.m. Monday at Shenandoah University at the Harry F. Byrd Jr. School of Business.
The seminar, which ends June 21, explores through scholarly presentations and field trips Cather’s encounters with different racial, ethnic, gender and cultural communities, and her transforming those encounters into fiction.
The first session is free and open to the public. The topic is “African-American Life in Sapphira and the Slave Girl: New Perspectives from Archaeology and History.”
Speakers include Ann Romines, professor of English, emerita, George Washington University; Matthew Clark Green, a candidate in anthropology at Syracuse University; Jonathan Noyalas, director of the McCormick Civil War Institute; Adeela Al-Kahlili, board member of the Josephine School Community Museum.
A seminar and informal dinner with members of the Cather family will be held at 6 p.m. June 18. The keynote speaker will be Siobhan B. Somerville. The week-long seminar is co-sponsored by The Willa Cather Foundation of Red Cloud, Nebraska, University of Nebraska-Lincoln and the Museum of the Shenandoah Valley.
