The Orkney Springs Fire Department will sell chicken barbecue halves starting at 11 a.m. Saturday at the firehouse.


The Strasburg American Legion is hosting a crab cake dinner from 4-7 p.m. Saturday. The menu includes two crab cakes, fries and hushpuppies for $10. There will also be steamed shrimp available for purchase at $10 per pound.

The Town of New Market has canceled its Movie Night in the Park on Saturday and the Jammin’ Foods Fest scheduled for May 30.

• The Memorial Day wreath-laying ceremony at Winchester National Cemetery has been cancelled, including the placing of flags at every gravesite. Visitors are free to place individual flags at a loved ones' gravesite if they wish.

• Arlington National Cemetery will be open only to family pass holders during the Memorial Day weekend with the following guidelines: security personnel will ask for proof of having face coverings and the pass is not to be used to visit other historic locations throughout the cemetery.

Throughout the weekend, Arlington National Cemetery is producing a multi-media virtual visitation which will be distributed on either its website or social media.

The only gate open to family pass holders over the holiday weekend will be the Memorial Avenue gate at the main entrance from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Strasburg High Scholars

Seven students from Strasburg High School were named Shenandoah Scholars by Shenandoah County Public Schools. They are: Sabrina J. Bauserman, Jana B. Bowman, Abigail K. Davis, Amber N. Gessner, Tessa I. Hockman, Corey E. Keller and Adam V. Klein.

They are among 27 students selected this year based on character, academic achievement and school and community involvement. Each student received a $1,000 scholarship.
