The Shenandoah Area Agency on Aging will host a dinner and cash bar event from 5-9 p.m. Saturday at the Winchester Moose Lodge, 215 E. Cork St., Winchester.

The Burner family reunion will be held at 5 p.m. Sunday at Patmos Lutheran Church, 807 Patmos Road, Woodstock. Those attending are asked to bring a covered dish and drinks. Paper products provided.


Shenandoah County Parks & Recreation will sponsor an AARP Smart Driver safety course from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Oct. 4 at the County Government Center in Woodstock for people ages 50 or older.

The cost is $15 for AARP members and $20 for non-members, plus a $5 registration fee payable to the parks and recreation department. The deadline to register is Sept. 27. Information: 540-459-6777.

Herb class

The state Arboretum at Blandy Farm in Boyce, in partnership with Sustainability Matters, will host a program on historic herbs from 2-4 p.m. Sunday.

The program will cover how American settlers used herbs for everyday needs, herbs that have fallen out of favor and surprising uses for common plants.

The Shawquon Ruritan Club in Stephens City is selling homemade apple butter. Pint jars can be purchased for $5 or $60 for a 12-bottle case. Shenandoah County Sheriff Timothy C. Carter was sworn in as president of the Virginia Sheriff's Association at its annual conference earlier this month in Williamsburg.

Officers for 2019/2020 are Gloucester County Sheriff Darrell W. Warren Jr., first vice president; Alleghany County Sheriff Kevin W. Hall, second vice president; Halifax County Sheriff Fred S. Clark, secretary; Frederick County Sheriff L.W. “Lenny” Millholland, treasurer.
