Lee Santos is helping couples make their first dance together a wedding moment to remember.

Santos said a couple usually will come to him with a piece of music already selected for their first dance.

It is up to Santos to work with the couple to come up with the choreography and teach them to dance. He can teach just about any style of dance to fit the music.

“They want to learn how to dance for their first dance together, do a little performance,” Santos said.

Sometimes a couple will come to him just a couple of weeks before the wedding, which he said is not really enough time.

“Once a week for eight weeks is probably a good number of lessons but the more lessons the better they are going to feel about dancing,” Santos said.

Santos, with his wife Peggy, began teaching dance in Minnesota in 1971.

Learning how to dance has gained in popularity, especially with dance shows on television in recent years, he said.

Santos holds his classes in the dance studio at Valley Health & Fitness at 1195 Hisey Ave. in Woodstock.

Pricing varies depending on a number of factors, including the number of classes and whether classes are private or group classes.

“It’s their first dance. They should invest in it and they will learn how to dance for a lifetime. They will dance at other events,” Santos said.
