The Northern Shenandoah Valley received reinforcements in the battle against opioid addiction when CVS Health announced Friday that the Aetna Foundation is giving a $1 million grant to the Northern Shenandoah Valley Substance Abuse Coalition for its new Law Enforcement Overdose Intervention Program.

This is welcome news for those deep in the fight to save the lives of our neighbors, friends and relatives here in the valley.

The program will set up a team to work with those who survive an overdose before being discharged from a Valley Health hospital. The team, which will consist of a case manager, a police officer, a counselor and a trained peer recovery specialist, will assist the patient through treatment and recovery.

Many thanks go to CVS Health/The Aetna Foundation for this grant as well as to all of the local residents and professionals who will be working in the prevention program.

This approach is a caring, positive step toward fighting the opioid epidemic.
