Several thousand Northern Shenandoah Valley residents found themselves in the dark and cold this week when icy weather brought trees down on power lines.

The loss of electricity offers a powerful reminder of just how much we rely on it to bring light, warmth and entertainment into our homes each day.

Out of Tuesday’s storm, and those coming up this weekend – yes, windy, wintry days are not over yet – come our heroes, the utility company linemen. This week they worked round the clock in less than ideal conditions to restore power.

If you see these heroes clad in bright yellow rain slickers at work or taking a break from their physically demanding and dangerous job, give them a wave or shout out a thank you. These aerial acrobats risk their lives to ensure that precious flow of electricity to our homes when nasty weather wreaks havoc.
